How to set up a POP 3 account in Windows Mail

Setting up an email account in the new Windows Mail which ships with Windows Vista.

Open Windows Mail (If you don't have a shortcut on your desktop you'll find it in through the START button on the left bottom corner. Look out for Windows Mail

Click on the menu TOOLS. The INTERNET ACCOUNTS window opens

Click the ADD button to add you email account details

Add a new POP3 account to Windows Mail

Make sure you have E-mail Account highlighted

Click the NEXT button.

In the input field for DISPLAY NAME write the name you want to recognise this email account later on.

Write your email address into the input field e.g. myaccount@mydomain.com

For incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: This is the web address of your mail server. It could be something like mail.yourdomain.com. You get this information when you set up your POP3 account from your web host.

For outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name: In most cases you will send email through your ISPs mail server. The details are normally sent with your ISP login details. You should be able to find those details also on your ISPs web site. Often it is like this: smtp.yourisp.co.uk.

If you ISP requires you to authenticate yourself before sending an email you need to tick the appropriate box. This is not usually used, as you are authenticated through your Internet connection you have established.

Click NEXT

Add a new POP3 account to Windows Mail

E-mail username is in most cases your email address. Username and password are provided by your web host or you'll get it from the person who set up your email account. This information is needed to logon to you POP3 account.

Click NEXT and FINISH on the next window.

Congratulations - you are done.  Test your email account and if you have any problems make sure that you provided the correct details.
