Firewall Protection

If you run a dedicated web server you have to secure your machine within half an hour with a firewall. Otherwise you may loose control of the machine.

Once an account for a dedicated web server has been activated the machine will be accessible on the Internet.  So called "Scanners" are busy all day long looking for unsecured machines on the Internet with the purpose to gain control over it.

Once your dedicated web server account has been activated, you need to immediately  install a firewall to protect yourself or better said the machine from intruders.

To do this quickly:

  • Know which firewall you want to use
  • Know how to configure the firewall for you purposes
  • Purchase the license and have the license key handy
  • Download the installation file for later FTP upload to the server or make sure you download it on the server straight away. However you do this, I do prefer to have the installation file downloaded on my machine just incase I can't get connected to the download server of the firewall. You don't want to give it any chance to go wrong
  • Install and configure your firewall
  • Make sure you don't lock yourself out

We use VisNetic from Deerfield, which comes with all the features and reliability you need. To download a demo version and to learn how to use your new firewall visit VisNetic Firewall Download VisNetic Firewall and select the appropriate version. We use this product also for our local machines and are happy with it.
